Celebration with Words by Tom Jones and Music by Harvey Schmidt

Celebration, written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt nearly ten years after their legendary off-Broadway smash, employs a number of the same aesthetic devices to tell their story of inevitable change and how one adapts and evolves as the seasons of life pass them by.

An orphan boy meets a beautiful but jaded young woman at the New Year's Eve bash of the richest man in the world and must choose to return to his old life or to move on, grow up, go after the girl and do all he can to change the world. A Protean company of revelers led by a cynical master of ceremonies guide them through the touching and bittersweet cycle of growing, learning, changing, and evolving as they grow older every day.

This show premiered on Broadway in 1969 when Time Magazine called it "one of those good things that comes in small packages." After a short run, it was reworked at Jones and Schmidt's Portfolio Workshop in the early 70's and, with the exception of a concert performance by the York Theater Company's Musicals in Mufti in 2001, the show has not been seen in New York City since. Be sure to catch this rare opportunity to see this show by two musical theater legends!
