tracts tells the story of four first year law students who are negotiating the terms of the unspoken contracts the expectations and obligations that govern their intimate relationships. The play intersperses scenes from a surreal classroom, in which the students grapple with various contract doctrines, with slices of the characters' lives. As they struggle with problems of divorce, fidelity, disability, and role-play in same-sex relationships, the students explore the difficulties these relationships pose to the autonomous self. At a time when gay marriage is positioned front-and-center in the American culture war, Contracts uses legal doctrine to ask important questions about the nature of love: can it be defined or preserved by contractual agreement, or must love be, simply, a gift?
