The Round of Pleasure

The Round of Pleasure is based on Schnitzler's La Ronde. It revolves around the actions and emotions of eleven characters, and their dark, twisted tale of exploitation, sexuality, and materialism. Through dark humor, late Austrian writer Werner Schwab creates an entertaining play that depicts a capitalist society where people are alienated; appearing to be marionettes manipulated by language and experiencing seduction as a sufficient form of pleasure. Although the play is within the native Austrian tradition of black comedy, it also utilizes the practice of neology using peculiar language that has come to define Schwab’s work. NSTC strongly believes that the aforementioned performance is a true test of the audience’s capacity for political satire and artistic risk.
