The Queen

by Aditya Rawal

directed by Gwynn Macdonald

This new play by Aditya Rawal inspired by Macbeth, Medea and the works of Rabindranath Tagore tells the story of a strong woman set in the peak of the Mughal era in India hundreds of years ago. With a cast of performers whose work ranges from Bollywood to Broadway, The Queen brings to life the fictional story of Durga, a queen consigned to the west wing of the palace after her husband, the Rajput king, marries a younger woman. She battles against the loss of her beauty and relevance and resolves to burn the palace down to avenge her husband’s betrayal. The Queen blends strong storytelling, powerful performances and Indian history as it explores themes of power and the position of women in society, an issue that in four centuries has not lost its importance.
