by Melanie Jones
ENDURE is written and performed by Melanie Jones. The piece addresses themes of endurance, sport, obsession, loss and resilience – through a human story set within the drama of a 26.2 mile marathon race. Audience members are issued iPods at the performance’s ‘start line’ and follow Ms. Jones through a sonic, visual and physical journey. The audio acts as both personal soundtrack (composed by Sweden’s Christine Owman) and internal monologue, giving participants a voyeuristic peek inside a marathoner’s mind. The audience moves with Jones across multiple terrains as the play’s narrative unfolds, traveling through city streets, public park space and trails. Ms. Jones’ performance is a blend of physical theatre, contemporary dance and pure running that taps into both the physical and emotional experience of endurance.
