The Mechanical transplants the Monster from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein into the true story of a chess-playing automaton built in 1770 by von Kempelen of the Austria-Hungary court. It was an illusion of ingenious design which played and defeated Napoleon, Ben Franklin and Beethoven. The Mechanical uses multi-media and physical agility to explore creation, artistic intent, social responsibility, perception and mystery.
