The Public Forum On: Small to Mid-sized Theatres held on February 17, 2009 succeeded in bringing together a diverse group of people to engage in spirited conversation about small theater in New York City. It was a successful show of support, but action must follow to create actual change. Many speakers called on the audience to stay activated and involved. “It is unbelievable how few people it takes, on message, to move a politician,” said Paul Nagle, Director of Cultural Policy for Councilmember Alan Gerson. If we stay motivated, Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President said, “I promise you, that you will keep this issue alive in the ‘09 election and in the 2010 election and eventually people are going to get it: that theatre is good for business, good for the next generation, good for people who look at New York in a way that makes us the most exciting place on Earth.”

Here's what you can do now
- Share your opinion on the tax abatement proposal at your local community board meeting:
Community Board 8 will be meeting at Memorial Sloan Kettering Auditorium,
430 East 67th Street (between First and York), on February 17th at 6:30PM. - The United States Department of Commerce will be conducting the 2010 Census, which will find out how many people live in New York City, how many elected representatives we will have in Congress, determine who will represent you in the City Council and in the New York State Legislature, determine how much funding we will receive from the federal government for education, healthcare, job training, transportation, senior services, and other critical services important to all New Yorkers. It is important for NYC artists to be counted. Take a moment now to complete the Census form.
- The Pew Charitable Trusts is about to launch the Cultural Data Project (CDP) in New York State. This project emerged out of a common need for more robust research, advocacy and policy discussions with and about the cultural sector.
- Find out more at the CDP website.
- Provide feedback to NYSCA program staff at cdp@nysca.org
- Help keep theatre and OOB a priority by attending community board meetings, sharing your experiences and speaking up. Check back about important events where your voice is needed.
