Among the noteworthy facts about this year's Eighth Annual NY IT Awards was the sweep by female playwrights in the writing categories: Chisa Hutchinson received the Outstanding Original Short Script for This Is Not the Play, Melanie Jones was presented with the Outstanding Original Full-Length Script for Endure: A Run Woman Show, and Donetta Lavinia Gray received the inaugural Doric Wilson Independent Playwright Award. Doug Stassler spoke with both Hutchinson and Jones about the experience.

SPOTLIGHT ON

FROM WHITE PLAINS

Fault Line Theatre was founded in 2010 by Brown/Trinity Repertory MFA actors Craig Wesley Divino and Aaron Rossini and Trinity Rep set designer Tristan Jeffers with a dynamic mission to create productions that engage and inspire an audience, converting the energy of a playwright's words into action.

Since that time they have produced productions of Doctor Faustus, Frogs, From White Plains and From the Same Cloth, as well as a live radio series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

It is a testament their ability to engage audiences and critics alike that they are announcing the Off Broadway transfer of their IT Award nominated play From White Plains to the Pershing Square Signature Center on 42nd Street in February!

Conceived and directed by Michael Perlman (and written and developed in a collaborative setting with the Fault Line Theatre company of performers and designers) From White Plains was nominated for three 2012 IT Awards: Outstanding Original Full-Length Script, Outstanding Premiere Production of a Play and Outstanding Actor in a Lead Role (Karl Gregory).

And as if that wasn't enough, in the same season, Karl Gregory was also nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Featured Role for his performance in their production of Frogs which received multiple nominations as well: Co-Artistic Director Aaron Rossini was nominated for Outstanding Director and the production was nominated for Outstanding Revival of a Play.

Last week, they learned that From White Plains was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Best Off-Off Broadway Play!

Overachievers!

From White Plains deals with the subject of bullying and its long-term effects by following the story of four men, straight and gay, as they attempt to take responsibility for their actions as teens, aided and complicated by social media and viral videos. The play examines how male relationships change as boys grow into men.

I spoke with Fault Line's Communications Director, Matt Clevy about the transfer from Off-Off to Off Broadway:

BORG:  This is very exciting news!

CLEVY: Well, a large part of the success of the first run of From White Plains was due to the incredible support and recognition from the Off Off Broadway community and the IT Awards in particular.

BORG: Oh go on, tell me more!

CLEVY: There is a strong sense of community in the off-off Broadway world. We are each other's best advocates and audience, and limited financial resources make our personal connections and professional relationships invaluable. It is largely due to the positive response from our colleagues in independent theatre and the recognition from the IT Awards that we decided to produce From White Plains in a larger venue for a longer run.

BORG:  What about working in Indie Theatre inspires your company?

CLEVY: Independent theatre is freeing...by creating our own work we grant ourselves the chance to say exactly what we mean. Without an expansive budget our primary elements are by necessity the actors, the audience and the text, which happen to be the three things I value most in the theatre. We aren't beholden to investors or other outside hands, so our focus can stay where it should: on the story we are trying to tell.

The original cast of From While Plains will return for the Off-Broadway transfer: Craig Wesley Divino, Aaron Rossini, Jimmy King, and Karl Gregory. The design team includes Tristan Jeffers (set design), John Eckert (lighting design), Jessica Wegener Shay (costume design) and Chad Raines (sound design).  IT runs February 8 through March 9 at the Pershing Square Signature Center.
