Spotlight On Una Aya Osato
Una Aya Osato
Outstanding Solo Performance nominee Una Osato is a performer and educator, born and raised in NYC, who has taught at numerous middle and high schools. As a performer she worked in television, theatre and dance from an early age. In 2000 she was awarded the level one prize in the US Arts Recognition Talent Search and was a finalist for the Presidential Scholar in the Arts position.
Since receiving the 2009 IT Award nomination for her acclaimed solo work, Recess, which she also wrote, Osato has performed the work at schools and theaters across the country. The play received the award for "Best Female Solo Show 2009" at the San Francisco Fringe Festival.
If you missed it the first time you can now catch Recess in a production directed by Moises Belizario in a reprise performance in NYC at the WOW Café Theatre through April 24th.
Focusing on a group of 7-year-olds, Recess gives audiences a glimpse into the minds and lives of children navigating their way through the NYC public school system. With relevance beyond those who work in education, Recess explores how to discover inspiration by listening to the voices of those who are typically ignored.
I asked Una what she likes about working in our community: “I like working in indie theater because of the immense creativity and the risks I see people taking in/with/through their work. I am also inspired by peoples’ passion and drive to share their work with the world, making it happen and not waiting for others to make their visions come true!”
“I have been performing this show nationally and internationally, but doing it in NYC is especially exciting and invigorating to me because this is where these stories and realities come from. I am honored to have the opportunity to share it with more of NYC.”
Recess performs April 21st through April 24th at the WOW Cafe Theater, 59 East 4th Street. For more information check out www.Recesstheplay.com.
