 SPOTLIGHT ON

BEKAH BRUNSTETTER

by Christopher Borg

BBrunstetter
Bekah Brunstetter at 2006 IT Awards Ceremony

We are always proud of great indie theatre artists when they receive recognition and work in the larger commercial theatre community in addition to their work "downtown." So when Atlantic Theater Company announced the first three productions of its 2009-2010 season, we were delighted to discover that, alongside a double-bill of co-founder David Mamet's plays Keep Your Pantheon and School, and fellow Pulitzer Prize winner Sam Shepard's Ages of the Moon, was our own Bekah Brunstetter's comedy Oohrah!, which will open in September on Atlantic Stage 2, the company's second stage.

This world premiere of "Oohrah!," to be directed by Evan Cabnet, marks Brunstetter's Off-Broadway debut. The play takes place in Fayetteville, North Carolina, home to one of the South's largest military bases. In a community where almost everyone has somebody deployed overseas, Sara is relieved when her husband Ron returns home from an uneventful tour in Iraq. But all find it difficult to settle back into domestic bliss and when a hot, mysterious Marine walks into their lives, all bets on stability are off.

A two time Innovative Theatre Award recipient, Brunstetter's other plays include Be a Good Little Widow (commissioned by Ars Nova 2009), To Nineveh: A Modern Miracle (IT Award Outstanding Full Length Script 2006 recipient), Sick (winner, Sam French short play festival 2006), Green (finalist Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival), Space (semi-finalist, Princess Grace Award 2007), I Used to Write On Walls (published by Samuel French), Fat Kids On Fire (published by Playscripts, Inc), and You May Go Now: A Marriage Play ( IT Award Outstanding Full Length Script 2008 recipient).

Says Brunstetter, "The thing I love about theater is that it is so much about actual friendships you make along the way, much more so than having to shmooze. It's been great to slowly move from Off-Off to Off-Broadway ....by trying to consistently write good plays and let the writing speak for itself, as well as by maintaining the relationships I've always had."

Oohrah! will run September 1st - 27th at Atlantic Stage 2, 330 West 16th Street (between 8th & 9th Avenues).
